about

Selwyth Duncan, the Maestro, led one of the most popular and esteemed dance bands in Trinidad during the nineteen-fifties and sixties. Like other dance bands of the period (Clarence Curvan His Drums and Orchestra for example, or Pete De Vlugt and the Dutchy Brothers), Sel Duncan and his Orchestra performed a repertoire of popular Latin songs, soundtrack themes, and calypsos. They also played tangos, waltzes, and boleros, and they interpreted works from the Romantics of 19th century Europe- Chopin, Beethoven, and especially Tchaikovsky. Unlike most of their contemporaries, whose arrangements tended to be up-tempo and who catered to a younger crowd, Duncan's band relished the melancholy and romance in their material, the genteel and the old-fashioned - music for a mature audience more interested in bittersweet recollections of youth. Dressed in white dinner jackets and bowties, they performed at formal events in hotels with names like The Scarlet Ibis and The Palm's Club, in ballrooms with heavily waxed floors, hung with ribbons and bunting. Up front, carrying the melody, were dual harmonizing saxophones, alto and tenor, played by Sel Duncan and Victor Koward. Together, they played in an expressive, unhurried style, full of vibrato, a brass boat cruising the waves of the rhythm section's powerful calypso swing. Guitarist Lio Richards (for many, the star of the band) was more like a flying fish, appearing suddenly, glinting and fluttering alongside before diving under again.

Listening to this music, I hope you feel, as I do, the presence of a place where the light from the chandeliers is low, where the graceful couples have left the long week far behind and are only thinking of each other and the song they are dancing to.
