Become the Moon is a compilation of Central Asian music originally released on the Soviet state-run record label, Melodiya. These songs come from from the five now-independent nations of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, which occupy the area between Russia and Northwestern China. Most of the selections feature traditional instruments, especially two-stringed lutes such as the dutar, dombra, and komuz. The styles of music on this tape range from traditional to synth pop, with a number of unusual hybrids of "western" and "eastern" music. The title comes from a lyric in a Tajikistani children's song "If you sit with the moon, you become the moon."

This album is a true gem for anyone who loves Taureg guitar. I can't believe this is one of the forerunners for the genre, but upon listening it's not a surprise. The complete production is beautiful. The vocals are really excellent, but my favorite aspect is the talent on the guitar, so intriguing & expertly composed ©ough©ool
